Troy Yocum Launches Active Heroes
Iraq veteran plans to continue fundraising for military families through new nonprofit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 29, 2012) – Building on last year’s momentum, Louisville native Troy Yocum announced today that he has formed his own nonprofit charity called Active Heroes.
Yocum had great success last year with his Hike for Heroes campaign, during which he hiked more than 7,800 miles across the United States. He raised more than $1 million for military families in need and was named the 2011 Volunteer of the Year in the 4th Annual Classy Awards. This year Yocum and his wife Mareike are looking forward to the challenge of managing a nonprofit on their own.
“Mareike and I are so ready for this,” said Yocum. “After raising money for other charities for the past two years, now it’s time to channel our experience into a venture that is solely focused on raising money for military families in need.”
The Active Heroes team will be traveling across the United States visiting national parks and small towns, spreading the word about their programs and meeting with the fundraising teams in each city. For potential donors, there are several levels of involvement, including a Hero Ambassador Program, Charity Hikes and Walk-a-thons.
“Active Heroes is something I am pouring my heart into,” said Yocum. “We hope to make it easy for people to raise money for military families and encourage them to be active while doing it.”
Last year Yocum had the support of several key corporations, such as Modell’s Sporting Goods, Party City, Louisville Slugger, Sketcher’s, Green Beans Coffee and Mission Athletecare. He hopes to continue those relationships this year.

Active Heroes Programs
Charity Hikes and Walk-a-thons
The Active Heroes team encourages people to get involved in fundraising by creating or participating in charity hikes and walk-a-thons across the U.S. There are many ways to get involved – you can organize your own event in your city (Walk-a-thons) or you can trek with the Active Heroes team as they visit National Parks across the United States (Charity Hikes). Troy and Mareike will be doing hikes ranging from a few miles to a 2-day extreme adventure. The hiking adventure days and schedule will be announced soon. Hero Ambassador Program
Active Heroes has partnered with Louisville Slugger to put together an awesome Welcome Kit for those who sign up to give a minimum monthly donation of $10. The ambassador program is for those who are committed to Active Heroes. As a reward for this commitment, hero ambassadors will receive the following: an Active Heroes pedometer, a biweekly e-newsletter, a personal Thank You from a military family, behind-the-scenes updates from the Active Heroes team, free admittance to any Active Heroes charity walks, and a very special one-year anniversary gift. At the next level of giving ($20/month), ambassadors will receive all of the above, plus a special Louisville Slugger mini bat and a 20% discount on any product from sluggergifts.com. Plus, ambassadors will be entered to win huge trip giveaways. The first giveaway will be announced at the end of March. By the end of the year, Active Heroes has a goal of 1,000 Hero Ambassadors. Every cent (100% of the donations) from the Ambassador donations are used to help military families.
