Matt Campbell to Hike the Entire Appalachian Trail to Raise Money for Military Families
(April 2012) – Army Veteran Matt Campbell will be hiking all 2,184 miles on the Appalachian Trail this summer with a goal of reaching the end point in Maine by the end of September. His bigger goal? Raising money for military families.
Campbell volunteered for the military in 2004, and, after eight years of service, he was honorably discharged. He knows what it is like to come back from deployment: “I know how hard it can be to transition back into civilian life. It troubles me to see someone who has given everything to make a better life for all of us, and then their own family struggles when the experience is over.”
Campbell is committed to the cause. And he’s proving it by walking the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. He is raising funds through Active Heroes, a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) charity that helps military families by providing financial assistance and job placement.
Troy Yocum, the founder of Active Heroes, knows what it’s like to hike more than 20 miles a day. He did it for 18 months as he hiked across the United States – more than 7,000 miles – in 2010 and 2011. Troy is thrilled that Matt is taking on this challenge and raising money for military families. “This is what it’s about,” said Yocum, “Inspiring others to want to help. Matt is doing this because he feels, as I do, that we have to support the military families who have done so much for our country.”
Campbell will be starting his journey on April 30. His goal is to raise $10,000 and anyone can help by joining his fundraising team. Visit activeheroes.org/trail for more information.
