Team Valdosta to participate in Memory Miles event May 19
Memory Miles event honors our nation’s fallen heroes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 8, 2012) – Afghan Veteran John Catlett knows what it’s like to struggle after serving in the military. After he was honorably discharged in 2006, he turned to friends, family and nonprofit organizations for help. So a couple of months ago, John was actively looking for a way to give back when he came across Active Heroes and decided to go for it.
“I had a sudden drive to lock myself in and just go ahead and do an event. I was in a bad place mentally, and yet I felt compelled to honor my brothers by doing an event,” says Catlett.
Since then, Catlett has recruited a team to walk 100 miles in 24 hours in partnership with an event called Memory Miles.
Memory Miles was created by Troy Yocum, the founder of Active Heroes, to honor our nation’s fallen heroes. More than 700 people across the country have already signed up through activeheroes.org. They are running, hiking, swimming and biking from May 19 through May 31 – all to raise money for struggling military families. A team has even been created in Japan. Overall 150+ teams have signed up so far, but more teams are needed.
Yocum is aiming to track more than 50,000 total miles and raise over $20,000 during the two-week event.
Catlett’s team is dubbed Team Valdosta and the team is starting their walk at 9:00 a.m., May 19, at Valdosta Middle School Track. Team Valdosta currently has about 150 team members and a modest goal of $1,000, but Catlett is hoping for much, much more: “We have people coming from all over Georgia – I am hoping we get close to 300 people to participate.”
