Active Heroes Announces Memory Miles Event May 19-31
Iraq veteran planning large-scale effort to raise money for military families
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 17, 2012) – Join forces with Troy Yocum, the founder of Active Heroes, and hundreds of others from around the world who are raising money for military families by participating in the national Memory Miles event May 19 through May 31.
Memory Miles is an event to remember our nation’s fallen heroes, including those who take their own lives after serving in the military because they come home to pressures they cannot withstand.
More than 600 people have already signed up through activeheroes.org. They are running, hiking, swimming, biking – all to raise money for struggling military families. A team has even been created in Japan. Overall 141 teams have signed up so far, but more teams are needed.
Yocum had great success last year with his Hike for Heroes campaign, during which he hiked more than 7,800 miles across the United States. He raised more than $1 million for military families in need and was named the 2011 Volunteer of the Year in the 4th Annual Classy Awards. This year is the third year for the Memory Miles event, but this year the event is going national.
“We wanted to create an event that would happen every year,” said Yocum. “Memory Miles is something that everyone can get involved with – you can do a little, or you can do a lot. It is so easy to go online and create your own fundraising team.”
The overall goal for the Memory Miles event is to walk, hike, bike, run or swim 50,000 miles. And Yocum is aiming to raise over $20,000 during the two-week event.
Army veteran Mark Greenlaw from Portland, Maine, says he “wanted to do the hike to help out veterans who are coming home and need help.” He and fellow veteran David Huff are hoping to raise at least $1,000.
Team Valdosta, from Georgia, is walking 100 miles in 24 hours for the cause. Their goal is to raise $1,000.
