Active Heroes has helped over 1800 military families with financial assistance since 2009. Now in 2013, Active Heroes introduces after action financial support from newly appointed board of advisory member Shannon N. Walkowiak, CPA. She will be working with families that Active Heroes supports to give future financial guidance so that more families are put on a path to succeed.
Walkowiak first met with Active Heroes at the TRAKAmerica/Active Heroes Golf Tournament in November 2012. She was assigned to work the putting contest and started talking to Active Heroes’ leadership and learning about the organization. She was immediately touched by them and their story to help military families. “I expressed my interest to get involved immediately. In May 2012 I lost a brother. He was a former Marine and served in Afghanistan. He suffered from PTSD and took his life. I was crushed and didn’t know how I was going to recover from such an emotional loss. I talked to Active Heroes during the fundraiser and the founder shared in my anguish. He understand the grieving process behind what I was going through and the same emotions I felt. After hearing more about Active Heroes I felt like I could breathe again. I could not wait to get home to tell my husband about how my life changed that day.”
Walkowiak is an audit manager at a national public accounting firm and has been with the firm for 9 years. She has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, a Bachelor of Science in Finance and a Masters in Business Administration. She considers herself a self-proclaimed numbers nerd. With her experience she hopes to bring a lot to the table and help military families. “My first goal is to help one veteran. Anyone after that I can help is a plus. My big hope is to be a resource! Finances can be a scary subject after getting out of the military. I have seen it in my personal experiences and hope that having someone to ask will provide a sense of comfort in the midst of questions.”
Active Heroes is excited to partner with Walkowiak to help more military families in 2013. The financial advice will go a long way towards helping these families become more self sufficient. Our collective goal is to help as many military families as possible!
