To the founders, family, and supporters of Active Heroes,
My name is Philip Bordeaux and I’m currently stationed in Naples, Italy. I’m active duty U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms Petty Officer Second Class. At the end of December 2012 my grandmother (who helped raise me and helped make me the man I am today) became very sick and I was told by my mother that the nurses were only giving her a few more days to live. My mother asked me if the hospital would send me a message and if I would be able to take emergency leave to go home. I wasn’t sure how the system operated so I told her to contact the hospital and ask them for advice. My mother called me back a little later and told me that the hospital was going to send me the message and that it would be up to my Chain of Command to decide if I would be able to go on emergency leave or not. When I hung up the phone I immediately contacted my Chain of Command to get the ball rolling. My Chain of Command was extremely helpful and expedited my request for emergency leave. They they told me to grab a spot on the rotator (the military’s airline) the next morning. Everything was getting situated when my mother called me again and told that my grandmother might not last long and that Active Heroes wanted to pay for my round trip flight back home! I was completely shocked and immediately flew from Rome, Italy to Atlanta, Georgia! Unfortunately I was not able to make it home in time to see my grandmother before she passed, however. If you get the chance to, go online and Google military pay chart and see just how much an E-4 with 3 years of service get’s paid per month. I can tell you right now that it is not very impressive. I cannot express how grateful I am to Active Heroes! I’ve been busy with work ever since I have returned to Italy so I haven’t had the chance to sit down and properly thank them. This still does not seem adequate in my opinion, but this is about as much as I can do for the time being. I know a lot of times people feel that when they volunteer for things the people that are helped aren’t really that grateful. That’s not the point. The point is that you help in anyway that you can because it’s the right thing to do! I feel this organization truly is here out of the goodness of American citizens hearts. Please keep up the great work and know that there are those of us grateful for EVERY little thing that you do! Peace and love from the service members in Italy!
MA2 Bordeaux, Philip
