On April 24th, donors gave $330,200 to Kentucky charities during Kentucky Gives Day, an online giving benefit.
Active Heroes battled hundreds of charities in the “small nonprofit” category and the competition heated up throughout the night. In the end, Active Heroes emerged with 5th place which includes an additional donation of $250. Active Heroes also won another $250 from a “golden ticket” award at 9pm for having the most unique donors during the hour.
Donations for all participating charities during the Kentucky Gives Day event was raised from more than 2,900 donors through the Web site Kygives.org. From midnight Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Kentuckians were encouraged to log onto the Web site and donate to any of about 380 charities. The site allows users to search for charities by name, category or zip code.
The Kentucky Nonprofit Network envisioned Kentucky Gives Day as an opportunity to encourage nonprofits to leverage social media and other online resources as a means of generating donations.
“It was an amazing and challenging day,” wrote Troy Yocum, founder of Active Heroes. “We really wanted first place but still enjoyed watching so many great charities raise funds for their causes. Active Heroes has learned some lessons from the contest and we hope to double our efforts in May for our biggest contest we have ever been invited to: the Aprons in Action voting contest for $250,000! May will be our true test and we have big plans to put on a live streamed show on May 31st to inspire votes for Active Heroes”
