Active Heroes recently partnered with SkillsUSA, a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps students excel at carpentry and more. A few months ago, Active Heroes founder Troy Yocum met with Fran Dundon, the SkillsUSA KY State Business and Industry Director who learned about our mission to reduce veteran suicide. Once she visited the Military Family Retreat she worked hard to align the SkillsUSA Competition to add a few items for veterans and their families.
While many dots were connected for the competition, another dimension was added. The students built sixteen 8’ picnic tables, planter boxes and welding fabrication (grill) contests were also donated to Active Heroes. Picnic tables not completed during competition were finished by Steve Anderson and Johnny Sewell, Iroquois HS SkillsUSA advisors. A special thanks to both of these men for their willingness to spend extra time on Saturday morning to ensure a successful outcome.
“It was an exciting time to watch each student finish their product and know that their work was going to help our Nation’s Heroes,” said Troy Yocum. “We were overjoyed when the tables, grills and boxes arrived at the retreat. Almost immediately the families flocked to the healing areas to relax.”
