Active Heroes partnered with The Veterans Business Employee Resource Group at UPS to help improve the front of the Military Family Community Center Located in Louisville, KY during the Mayor’s Give a Day Campaign. Each year in Louisville, KY, Active Heroes participates in the Mayor’s Give a Day Campaign to continue Louisville’s tradition of volunteerism and selfless generosity. Louisville’s Mayor Greg Fischer has set a goal for the city to reach 165,000 total volunteers over the course of a week and Active Heroes is one of the charities listed by the city for volunteers to help. UPS chose to transform the the Active Heroes front sign at the military family community center that had large bushes that were overgrown and causing a problem with the nighttime display lighting system.
The Team of veterans and civilian volunteers who are all employees at UPS removed the bushes and other large tree stumps with a powered grinder, added soil, planted flowers and mulched the grounds over a few hours.
UPS recognizes U.S. military personnel for being known for their leadership skills. UPS has put these abilities to great use over the years and plans to hire 50,000 veterans and serve 50,000 employee volunteer hours by the end of 2018 as part of the National Joining Forces Initiative. Nearly 24,000 veterans are employed by UPS and approximately 900 employees are on military leave on any given day.
The Veterans Business/Employee Resource also hosted a meeting for members at the Military Family Community and discussed future projects including woking at the Active Heroes Retreat Center in Shepherdsville, KY.
“The UPS Veterans BRG committee members really enjoyed helping Active Heroes with this small landscape job,” said Lee Heironimus, UPS Veterans BRG Chair. “Working with Active Heroes, planting red, white and blue flowers and hearing the story of founding the Active Heroes organization gave us all a feeling of extreme pride and patriotism! Our committee will continue to work with Active Heroes in the future to engage the local veteran’s community and UPS will continue to be a strong supporter and employer for veterans.”
