Active Heroes was proud to welcome Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to our Military Family Community Center earlier this week! Mayor Fischer was given a tour of our center by Active Heroes President Troy Yocum, and then talked to our staff members about all of the services, events, and programs that Active Heroes offers to military service members and their families.
Mayor Fischer first met Troy more than five years ago, at the conclusion of Troy’s Hike For Heroes walk across the country. Mayor Fischer was one of the hundreds of people on hand to welcome Troy, Mareike, and the rest of the Hike for Heroes group back to Louisville. It was then that Troy shared his vision of Active Heroes with Mr. Fischer, and the now-Mayor of Louisville was excited to tour our new Military Family Community Center on Bardstown Road. “To see all the progress that’s taken place since [the opening] has been amazing, and what’s driving this is just the desire to do good for Veterans,” said the Mayor. “The tenacity your team has shown to get this project off the ground and offer these services to our Veterans… it’s a pure and noble goal, and from that good things happen and a lot of people get help, to in turn help other people. That’s why we’re here on the face of the Earth.”
We hope to see the Mayor again soon, and of course he has an open invitation to visit our Military Family Retreat in Shepherdsville or join us for a Carry The Fallen ruck march whenever he likes! We’re very grateful for the support of Mayor Fischer and his office, as well as the countless citizens of Louisville and across the country who have supported us in our goals to combat Veteran and military PTSD and bring an end to Veteran suicide.
