On Saturday June 7th, 2015, local volunteers from the YMCA in Louisville, KY volunteered at the Active Heroes Retreat. The volunteer group made up of eleven individuals ranging from veterans to civilians focused on clearing out the only pond at the retreat. The group picked out debris and removed it to a large dumpster bag that will be picked up by waste management. The work area is a four acre section of the retreat that is going to be a future cabin location. Its an area at the retreat that Active Heroes has been working on all year long to prepare for the future construction.
“We are steadily clearing out this four acre section this year,” said founder of Active Heroes, Troy Yocum. “We are now seeing a lot of progress and these volunteers from the YMCA are contributing towards that goal. We can’t thank volunteer groups enough for helping out so much this year.”
YMCA ambassador, Scott Ramazani was a participant at an Active Heroes hiking event in May called the Carry The Fallen. After being inspired to give back, he and his wife put out a clip board for several weeks at the local YMCA for volunteers to sign up at the downtown Louisville, KY gym. The turnout was more than expected.
“The Carry The Fallen ruck march was a great experience and it supports a great cause, ” said Scott Ramazani. “As a civilian, I personally was never in the military, but I find that this Active Heroes Retreat helps military families once they come back. It’s very beneficial.”
