Retired Army Major, Justin Fitch was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2014. He was given only months to live and pledged support to the Active Heroes Retreat in his last days to help raise funds to build a military family cabin. Now in 2015, Active Heroes and Chive Charities are uniting for a fundraiser to help accomplish Fitch’s dream!
Being a combat veteran, Fitch has dealt with post traumatic stress and almost took his own life. Now he fights everyday to stay alive and help other veterans struggling with PTSD and other forms of depression while fundraising for the Active Heroes Retreat Center, a place of healing for military families. Justin Fitch met Troy Yocum, founder of Active Heroes, after Yocum finished his 7880 mile hike across America, dubbed the Hike for Heroes. It was then that the pair helped to develop a team hiking event across the nation called the Carry The Fallen Ruck March to build camaraderie and combat 22 veterans a day that commit suicide. In 2014, Active Heroes was able to purchase 144 acres in Shepherdsville, KY to begin a retreat program to help thousands of veterans and their families with donations raised by the efforts of the hiking events.
Since the land purchase, Active Heroes has continuously fundraised to repair the trails, clear out fields and clean up debris so that military families can visit. There have even been camping dates hosted by Active Heroes at the location. The charity however has struggled to afford to build cabins and repair roads so that families can stay longer and have a more enjoyable vacation.
“We have stretched donations as far as we possibly can to develop areas of the retreat center,” said Troy Yocum. “Everyday we have been hoping for a way to raise more donations to finally develop the first cabin so we don’t fail in completing Justin Fitch’s Final Mission”
Chive Charities is answering the call to support Justin Fitch. Starting on July 1st, 2015, Chive Charities will be donating $25,000 and launching a crowd fundraising campaign to raise an additional goal of $50,000 towards the development of the first cabin. The campaign titled “Justin Fitch’s Final Mission” will be found online on a GoFundMe donation page where anyone can help double Chive Charities’ donation.
“Justin is a hero, and not just because of his service for his country. He is fighting with his dying breath for future generations of returning brothers-in-arms who are struggling with post traumatic stress,” said Brian Mercedes, Executive Director at Chive Charities. “Chive Charities and theCHIVE are just happy to give Justin’s cause a megaphone so the masses can hear his incredible story. His passion has inspired us and will hopefully inspire millions.”
With the help of the nation, the Chive community and Active Heroes’ supporters, the team hopes to raise the huge goal soon before Justin Fitch can’t fight anymore.
