The Zumba Master Class was very exciting with over 150 participants. The event lasted 2 hours and everyone had a smile on their faces. Even some families who were nervous in the beginning seemed to transition into being very excited throughout the event.
On July 19, 2015, Kariny Sander and other instructors hosted the first Zumba Master Class at Fort Campbell, KY in support of Active Heroes. Donations were raised by the participants who registered that totaled over $1500 for the Active Heroes Retreat Center located in Shepherdsville, KY. Special guests included Bianca Ayala Liotta, Catherine Chiemelu, Constanza Espinoza, Jarred Wilson, Keila Valdivieso, Nikki Primm and Christina Swass Davis. The event also honored SGT Scott Sander, the husband to Kariny Sander who lost the battle to post traumatic stress nearly two years ago. “This will be a celebration of his life,” Kariny wrote on the Facebook event.
Zumba fitness is a huge party around the world (180 countries, over 150 million people are participating in Zumba classes). Zumba is a beautiful marriage of Fitness and fun. This event in particular, brought something positive to something so sad (veteran suicide). It let people know about how serious PTSD can be while helping the participants to reach their goal in weight lost and/or becoming healthier.
“Since I became a Zumba instructor and had more connections with military families, I am witnessed PTSD,” said Kariny. “Unfortunately, it hit my family very hard but after my husband passed way, I had many wives and active military coming to my classes. They feel free in my class and thank me. They relieve stress in a place where they can scream, a place where no one will judge them. The music moves our hearts to a happy place.”
Active Heroes will be working with Kariny Sander and her team of volunteers to bring Zumba to other states in the future to help thousands of veterans and military families.
