Active Heroes is a 501c3 veteran suicide charity. The mission of Active Heroes is to support all U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs in an effort to eliminate suicide.
In 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ study determined that an average of 22 veterans a day take their own lives. This alarming statistic resulted in the need for us to form a veteran suicide charity that put veterans first by providing a local community center as well as a retreat center that would accept veteran visitors from all over the U.S.
In 2014 the Department of Veterans Affairs’ announced that they had seen a reduction in veteran suicides to 20 veterans a day. This reduction is largely due to national veteran suicide charities, like Active Heroes. As a committed veteran suicide charity, we plan to remain until there is none. One is too many.
If 20 veterans a day commit suicide, that’s 7300 Americans annually. That’s more suicides annually than the total American deaths during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) since the wars began. This statistic is so shocking, that many people don’t believe that it is even possible. We are here to tell you that that number is hauntingly accurate. These veterans have served in WW2, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
