Active Heroes’ first Military Family Retreat Center volunteer day goes off without a hitch. Ryan DeLong, Retreat Center Manager, stated the plans for the day were to clean up the top 4-acre plot around the cabin area. The day started out cold, but six brave volunteers still showed up. As focus began with beautification around the cabin, work completed quickly brought new life to the area.
“There was a lot of brush to pick up and burn,” said Ryan. “We also cleared a lot of underbrush using clippers and saws. We had a volunteer work the tractor, assisting in uprooting stumps, to allow us to safely mow the section that was cleared. We also used the tractor to level the ground around the cabin and graded it to prepare for grass seed.”
With temperatures rising this week Active Heroes hopes to get grass seed down, hopefully allowing a lush green lawn to grow in around the cabin before the Retreat Center officially opens. Ribbon cutting for the Retreat Center will take place on May 27, 2016. To register to attend the cutting please visit https://fundraise.activeheroes.org/JFCabin
“Overall it was a successful day. There were no injuries, and it was a great first event,” boasted Ryan.
Active Heroes’ next Military Family Retreat Center volunteer day is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016. Plans for the day include continued brush cleanup and landscaping around the cabin.
