Many changes have been underway at the Active Heroes’ Military Family Community Center over the past few weeks. Improvement projects for the facility have kept staff and volunteers busy with “spring cleaning.”
Volunteers have assisted with the development of an improved serenity area. This is a place where veterans and military family members can step away and enjoy the tranquility of acupuncture, massage and Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions.
“While these services have been offered at the Community Center over the past year, the space for the treatments has not always been in a fixed location. Now, if a veteran has a difficult day and needs a quiet place, to clear their head or simply relax, they know they can step away into one of our two rooms without interruption. They can even do this on days when sessions are not being offered,” said Courtney Sheridan, Program Coordinator at the Community Center.
Other enhancements at the Community Center include the addition of a children’s play area and expansion of the Active Heroes store. Long time supporter and volunteer Dan Roberts, Army veteran, has spearheaded a majority of the improvement projects around the Center, and many other key volunteers have put in countless hours to make these changes possible.
“I spend a lot of time at the Community Center. It’s a great place for me to get away from the house, where I still feel at home. I think the changes we are making will help other veterans feel the same way about this place,” says Roberts.
The Active Heroes Community Center is located in Louisville, Kentucky. The Community Center is open to veterans of all eras and assists hundreds of prior service members, active, reserve, guard and military family members every month. The Center provides activities for veteran and their families that help them heal, build camaraderie and connect with resources.
There will be a volunteer day at the Active Heroes’ Community Center on May 28, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
