It has been a very busy week at the Active Heroes’ Military Family Retreat Center. Things are moving along quickly, despite the large amount of rain Kentucky and neighboring areas have received in recent weeks.
Still, multiple volunteer groups came out and trudged through the often ankle-deep mud to accomplish numerous tasks in preparation for the First Cabin’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
Volunteers from 4th Cavalry Brigade worked most of the week shaping the parking lot expansion with heavy equipment, providing excellent technical advice, and making sure the Retreat has a parking lot to accommodate visitors. The Cavalry volunteers also tore down the barn on the top four-acres, and were even able to reuse some of the materials removed to assemble an ATV and foot-bridge to the horse field.
On Friday, volunteers from General Electric’s veteran network cleared brush along the stream adjacent to the horse field. The removal of the brush will allow future visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the stream while tending to the horses.
That same day, volunteers from Brown Foreman moved all of the leftover material from the barn to the dumpster. The removal of the barn greatly improves the overall beauty of the area for future Retreat visitors.
To end the week, on Saturday, a group from JOM Pharmaceutical Services removed brush and used weed-eaters to clear areas of the property that are not accessible by mower.
“There has been a lot of progress made in the past few weeks. I would like to personally thank everyone that has ventured out to the Retreat and volunteered their time and services. Because of some amazing people, things are starting to come together and look really good for the ribbon cutting on May 27th,” said Ryan DeLong Retreat Center Manager.
Active Heroes will be holding the First Cabin’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, at 10 a.m. on May 27, 2016, at 1022 Ridgeview Dr. Shepherdsville, KY. 40165.
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place in honor of Major Justin Fitch, U.S. Army Retired, and festivities will include: a ribbon cutting ceremony for the first cabin, ground-breaking of the second cabin site, guest speakers, hay-ride tours of the Retreat, a food truck and DJ.
