Lately, It has been really humid at the Active Heroes Retreat. It has been one of the wettest summers to remember in a long time. The grass is growing like a jungle out at the retreat. Work has continued despite the harsh conditions. UAW Local 862 has continued work on the second cabin, the event pavilion and Welcome center. Their help is vital to the Active Heroes Retreat. We also had a large group of over 20 volunteers from Brown Forman come out and help at the retreat. The group helped prepare the area for the petting zoo along with several other projects around the retreat.
The group worked hard in some really humid conditions to clean out the old barn, clear brush, cut down trees, and clear the overgrown entrance road. We look forward to working on the petting zoo area so we can have animals for families to enjoy out at the retreat. We were able to live stream some of their work on our Facebook page, so if you have time please take a look at all the hard work they did and what their employees had to say about volunteering with Active Heroes.
Our monthly volunteer day at the retreat day went well on Saturday August 27th. We had six volunteers show up from Kohls and Gordon Food Service distribution center. We were able to thin out the overgrown underbrush in the horse field while leaving large trees for shade in the field. Their help was outstanding even with several hard rain showers during the day.
We have a lot of things in the works for the Active Heroes Retreat. We plan to start excavation of the pond in the fall which will be a great place for recreation to include paddling, fishing, and it will help attract wildlife. This weekend we have a Canoe and Kayak trip for veterans at Canoe Kentucky to expose veterans to the many benefits of paddling. We are also working with a volunteer for our Nature with Neil classes which are survival type wilderness classes for veterans, and their family members. The first class will be September 17th. The sign ups for these events can be found on our Facebook page and on our website.
We hope to see more volunteers out at the retreat as the weather cools. We not only need large groups but also volunteers that can come out weekly or bi-weekly to help out. We have multiple projects. Please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e054aafa82ba5f85-active
Also, please support our Bass Fishing Tournament in Kentucky at Rough River Lake on October 1st.
