This past week Saturday at the Community Center was a very busy and productive with many things taking place. We kicked off the morning with the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser with eleven in attendance. If you didn’t make it out you missed out on a homemade recipe for pancakes that have the right flavor when paired with the side of maple sausage links. To have fun with the pancakes for the kids there were chocolate chips and peanut butter chips for added flavor. As always all proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast go to help keep the programs and services of Active Heroes free of charge to veterans and their families. After bellies were full we moved into the Parent’s Talk Group; where parents of active and veterans who would like to come and meet to talk with others in their position are able to where they may not find that with their friends or other families who may not be in their position. Kevin Canfield who is an Air Force veteran and certified counselor in Elizabethtown joins us for this group and helps answer any questions or concerns that one may have. To follow up a great group discussion we lead right into Yoga where you can find the inner peace and stretch out those worries; where 4 participants took on finding a new rejoice within themselves.
We would like to give a nice shout out to Lysette Mere-Huertas for spending several days with us volunteering here at the Community Center and Retreat. Lysette had participated in the ruck march that took place in Easton, PA. After the event Lysette knew she needed to learn more about Active Heroes and actually see the location in person. She had vacation due to her and so with that time off she flew down from New Jersey and volunteered her time with Active Heroes. Lysette started her first day at the Community where she learned of all the programs and services, resources, and learned more about the other national events we host. From the community center the last few days she spent her time at the Retreat working alongside our staff and other volunteers from the area in helping get the retreat beautified. In Lysette’s own words “First I wanted to take the time to thank you for allowing me to volunteer. This has truly been an exhilarating experience for two reasons, one being a part of worthy cause and two for visiting Kentucky altogether for the first time. Thank you Mareike for taking the time to reply to my questions, it made me feel a bit more comfortable knowing that just as I took the time to volunteer, as such it is worthy of a response. Also, thank you Ryan and Cory for welcoming me to the site. Most of all, a tremendous thank you to Amelia whose engaging personality and contagious enthusiasm for Active Heroes, cemented my beliefs of the mission of your organization. Finally, Jim and his genuine enthusiasm for your organization is palpable and contagious. Thank you all for your hard work. “ From all of us at Active Heroes, Lysette thank you for taking your vacation time and joining us here at the Community Center and Retreat and volunteering!
