On June 24th 2017, Active Heroes and Survivor Outreach Services, from Ft. Knox, teamed up to host a Family Cookout at the Active Heroes Community Center in Louisville, KY. Close to 100 people attended the family-friendly event, including retired veterans, active duty military, military children, military spouses, and families of the fallen. The weather was beautiful and everyone was able to enjoy the day outside participating in activities, games, and eating some traditional cookout food.
Attendees enjoyed delicious food and sweet treats while they mingled with other military families and participated in lots of different activities. Activities at the cookout included face painting, crafts, and indoor/outdoor games for the kids. The kids enjoyed getting their faces painted like their favorite characters, such as Hello Kitty, and playing games like cornhole and hoola-hoop. Meanwhile there were gardening crafts, as well as live demonstrations of some of the services offered at the community center for the adults. And last but not least, there were multiple raffle giveaways for family-fun activities including tickets to Holiday World amusement park and tickets to a Louisville Bats baseball game.
Active Heroes and Survivor Outreach both hoped that this event would create a fun and safe environment for military families, where they would have the chance to enjoy a day with their family, and also meet other families that are going through similar situations. It was also a great way to provide information about all of the great services that Active Heroes has to offer at the community center.
By the end of the day there were several inquiries about what future events the community center was hosting, which is evidence of the fun that was had during the cookout. Said Tyra Anderson, “There were lots of laughs and smiles seen that day.” “I’d definitely say the 2017 Military Family Cookout was a success!”
