On November 11, 2013, veteran’s day, Active Heroes acquired the Active Heroes Retreat Center. Since then, hundreds of volunteers have worked tirelessly to clear debris and develop the land. The Retreat Center is located in Shepherdsville, KY, just about 40 minutes away from Louisville, Bardstown, and Fort Knox, so it is able to be accessed by as many military families as possible. The goal of the Active Heroes Retreat Center is to give veterans and military families a place to go and heal. Active Heroes strives to do this through a number of ways including, healing through nature, healing through family activities, and healing through integration. The retreat center will be a place for families to go to re-connect, build memories, and celebrate some of life’s biggest occasions.
Over the last four years, there have been many changes to the Retreat Center. Once all of the debris on the land was cleared, construction began, including the building of main entrance roadways, bridges, the welcome center, cabins, and an event pavilion. The construction of the main entrance roadways and bridges were completed by a number of volunteers including a group from the National Guard, as well as through fundraising done by Nucor Steel Company. As the construction of the welcome center wraps up, Active Heroes plans to start hosting more families at the retreat and be able to host different events. Along with the welcome center, the pavilion on the land will be able to be rented out for events and even weddings.
Aside from being able to host a number of different events, the main goal of the Retreat Center is to help military families heal. It is actually the first retreat center of its kind in America and is designed by military families for military families. Some of the ways that the center will promote healing is through a number of different activities as well as a safe place for veterans struggling with PTSD to integrate and intermingle with the public, while feeling comfortable. There is a nature park located on the 147 acres that provides a calming and peaceful atmosphere for families to enjoy. Another positive aspect of the retreat is the planned activities that families can enjoy while staying there. Sporting activities and family challenges are a great way to build a strong bond with your family and have fun. As the retreat continues construction, even more activities will be added, such as a basketball court, Louisville slugger batting cages, and fields for soccer and ultimate frisbee.
Active Heroes is very thankful to all of the volunteers who have spent years working at the retreat to make it a perfect place for military families. As more and more construction is completed Active Heroes hopes to be able to have many military families come to visit the retreat center and have a healing experience as well as create lasting memories.
