On Veteran’s Day weekend Active Heroes hosted a Wellness Festival and 5K at Louisville Waterfront Park at the Festival Plaza. Starting at 10:30am on Friday, November 10th, guests gathered at Waterfront Park for this event benefiting Active Heroes, a 501c3 charity whose goal is to provide programs to help eliminate military/veteran suicide and provide support to military families. “This is our first year to be holding the Active Heroes Wellness Festival and we couldn’t be more excited. It has been years since we had a 5K down in Waterfront Park and since then people have constantly been asking us when we’d be doing another one”, said Jeremy Sneed, manager of events and volunteers for Active Heroes. This event featured a workout area, Active Heroes information space, Active Heroes store, massage area, jin shin jyutsu area, a pop-up wedding area, sponsor area, and a peer mentor training area. The events on Friday took place from 11:00am – 6:00pm, with more activities following on Saturday.
On Saturday, November 11th, runners gathered at Festival Plaza to get ready for the start of the 5k race at 9am. It was a very chilly morning, but runners braved the weather in support of Active Heroes. In addition to the events on Friday and the race on Saturday, Active Heroes also had a Pound Challenge going on over the weekend with a goal to lift 20 million pounds. The challenge hoped to raise awareness of the 20 daily veteran suicides. Sponsors Bryant Heating and Cooling, along with others, spent Friday lifting various weights in order to complete the challenge. Even children were getting involved and enjoyed helping out by lifting the one-pound weights.
Overall the events that took place over the weekend were a huge success for Active Heroes and for raising awareness for veterans and military families. In addition to the Wellness Festival events, Active Heroes was able to walk in the Louisville Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, after the conclusion of the 5K. Prior to the start of the weekend, Jeremy Sneed said, “Combine the 5K, on top of the Pound Challenge, and getting to walk in the Veterans Day Parade, I think the Wellness Festival is going to be an incredible experience”, and I think all of the participants and volunteers would agree that it was.
