Active Heroes, a 501c3 charity, has been providing resources and hosting events to support veterans and military families since 2011. The vision of Active Heroes is to eliminate military/veteran suicide, and its mission is to support all military service members, veterans, and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs. These programs provide a number of benefits to military families that are helping to lower the number of veteran’s suicides. Currently, 20 veterans a day commit suicide, and Active Heroes will continue to provide these resources until the number is zero.
The programs and resources provided by Active Heroes range from a Peer Mentor program, to events, to scholarships. Each program is designed to help military families and bring awareness to the epidemic of veteran/military suicide. Our peer mentor program connects veterans to civilian supporters who have been trained by the QPR Institute. A peer mentor can provide support anytime to veterans who are struggling with PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. Additionally, our events provide support and a sense of community to those in the military and military families. Our active events also help to raise awareness about veteran/military suicide and are a great way to get an entire community involved.
Our signature events include Carry the Fallen, Aiming for Zero, Stand at Attention, WOD to End Veteran Suicide, Zumbathon for Active Heroes, Gaming for Heroes, and more. Our Carry the Fallen events are ruck marches (hiking) that are coordinated by volunteer team leaders, and the participants hike while carrying weight that symbolizes the burden that many veterans carry. These events raise awareness for veteran suicide and provide a sense of community for the veterans in that town. Another popular active event is Zumbathon for Active Heroes. These amazing events are hosted by Zumba instructors and encourage fitness to military families and veterans. Another event that encourages community is Gaming for Heroes. The goal of this activity is to connect veterans, active duty, and all service members in the gaming community. Each of these different activities and events provide different resources to military communities across the country. No matter what your interests may be, there is an event that will fit your personality and provide a way for you to either gain support or get involved with the charity.
These national activities and resources are built to provide support and encouragement for military heroes. Inspiring military heroes to be active, seek support, and lean on their community is helping to bring an end to the epidemic of military/veteran suicide.
