Featuring Retreat Volunteer Don Barbiea
We have been working hard at the Retreat Center to add cabins, finish out the Event Pavilion, and work on the Retreat Center as a whole to provide more healing areas and activities for our veterans and their families. We have been graced with wonderful volunteers during this process. One specific volunteer has put forth more time and effort and is making a huge difference at the Active Heroes Retreat Center, Don Barbiea.

Dirt Road Steel and Old Glory
Dirt Road Steel teams up with Active Heroes to support our heroes. James Dow wanted to partner with Active Heroes to give back, not to just write a check, but to start a partnership that would benefit Active Heroes from his sales on his “Old Glory Flag”. Dirt Road Steel has pledged to raise over $100,000.00 by the end of 2021 to help build Active Heroes’ Retreat Center. 15% of every Old Glory Wooden Flag goes directly to Active Heroes.

22 Pushup Challenge and How it Makes a Difference
Active Heroes hosts a 22-pushup challenge, this challenge allows for veterans and non-veterans alike to participate in physical activity that also supports veterans and their families. One of our recent challengers comes from a company called Credit Suisse. Credit Suisse is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Connor Todd is a software developer there and is a part of the Americas Veteran Network. The staff at Credit Suisse consists of consists of 41 people, plus Connor’s wife, daughter, and friend. These 45 people are making a huge difference for our heroes!

Highland Games and Heroes
The Highland Games were hosted this year at Active Heroes’ Retreat Center in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The participants were beautifully clad in their Scottish kilts while throwing hammers and sheaf tossing. Although, the morning started out cold, the day warmed up and the athletes won their awards for the day. That day a world record was achieved!

Aiming for Zero Prevails
Our most recent Aiming for Zero event was hosted in Maine. Steve Bedell joined forces with Jason Beam and hosted the event to support Active Heroes.

Stepping Up with Active Heroes
Active Heroes is proud to announce Stepping up For Heroes support for National Veterans and Military Families Month. Over 20 veterans a month commit suicide and together we are making a difference.

Scholarship Giveaway from Active Heroes 2020
Sullivan University partners with Active Heroes to give away scholarships each year. This year we gave away two scholarships worth $70,000.00! Our winners this year are Nathan P Aseltine and Breanne Wise.

Altar’d State Alters Giving on a New Level
This month they chose us! Active Heroes is the proud recipient of a, little over, $1300.00 check as a donation to our heroes. Our Executive Administrative Assistant went to the store location in the Oxmoor Mall to meet the manager and some of the staff to pickup the generous gift.

Healing with Horses at Active Heroes
Active Heroes provides horseback riding at our Retreat Center in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Horseback riding is a therapeutic way to get involved with nature and it’s relaxing qualities. Horseback riding is known to reduce symptoms of anxiety, ptsd, and depression.

Finishing His Fundraiser for Active Heroes
John Sherrod completed a 70.3 mile swim\bike\run event for Active Heroes mission to end veteran suicide, in 92 degree weather!

Fighting Trauma with a Triathlon, Honoring a Marine
John honors a friend, a marine veteran, who suffered from combat PTSD and depression who lost his life to suicide. Even though John is not a veteran, he often regrets not serving. John now serves our country through his triathalon campaign. John has raised so far just over $6,000.00 to help support Active Heroes and our cause to support veterans with a mission to end veteran suicide.

Eight Year Old Ellie Pushes for Veteran Suicide Awareness
In Renron, Washington there lives a little girl, she is eight years old, and her name is Ellie Chang. Ellie is a gymnast, and Ellie is an advocate for veteran suicide awareness. Ellie started an online video of her pushup challenge for Active Heroes. This adorable little girl will amaze you with her heart for veterans. Ellie has an uncle that served in Iraq, another unclie that currently serves on a submarine in the Navy, Ellies granfather on her dad’s side was in the Korean War, her grandfather on her mom’s side served in the US Army, and her great grandfather on her mom’s side flew P-47 Thunderbolts in WWII for the Army Airforce.
